Preparing for Surgery

RGH’s Perioperative Department offers the latest in surgical technology. Services are provided in multiple specialties by board-eligible or certified surgeons, Registered Nurses, Certified Surgical Technologists, Central Sterile Technologists and ancillary staff.

  • Please complete the forms provided by your surgeon’s office (or download here) and bring them with you to your appointment.
  • Bring a copy of any lab work, x-rays, EKG or other diagnostic information that you have available with you to the Pre-Admission consult. Please arrange to have any studies done elsewhere faxed to (804) 435-8078.
  • Help to prevent infection by preparing your skin for the planned procedure by following the instructions provided to you for Hibiclens.
  • Bring all of your medications with you so that we can confirm dosages and schedules. It is important to know exactly which medications you are taking. Medication reconciliation form
  • If you have not been instructed to stop any medications, then you should take your regular morning medications on the day of your surgery with a small sip or water.
  • ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO EAT OR DRINK AFTER MIDNIGHT except the sip of water allowed with medications on the morning of the surgery.
  • Please make arrangements for transportation home from the hospital. If you do not have a driver, we will be unable to perform your surgery. We ask that your driver remain in the hospital during your surgery.
  • You cannot be discharged to the care of a bus or taxi driver.
  • Please arrange for someone to care for you at home overnight.
  • Your arrival time has been scheduled for one to two hours prior to your surgery start.
  • Caring for you safely is our utmost concern.
